Abstract
Asbab al-Nuzul (occasions of revelation) is a fundamental concept in Quranic sciences, referring to the examination of events and contexts surrounding the revelation of verses. This topic has long been of interest to Quranic scholars and commentators. However, challenges such as the extent of asbab al-nuzul, the manner of generalizing a verse’s ruling, the limits of the influence of the cause of revelation, numerous shortcomings in its narratives, and the significant impact of this knowledge on the science of interpretation and understanding the divine intent in the Quran, highlight the necessity of re-examining this subject. This research, employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, introduces the sources of knowledge regarding asbab al-nuzul, the scope of their application, their functions, significant difficulties in the narratives of asbab al-nuzul, and ways to overcome them. The existence of non-independent sources of knowledge such as Imam Ali’s (a.s.) Mushaf, narrative and juristic interpretations, comprehensive interpretive works, and independent sources like single asbab al-nuzul compilations and al-Rawandi’s works, a methodological shift in the discussions of asbab al-nuzul by al-Zurqani, functions such as assisting in the correct understanding of verses and preventing misinterpretations, numerous difficulties in the narratives of asbab al-nuzul such as weak chains of transmission, conflicting accounts regarding a single verse, inconsistencies with the context or time of revelation, and assertions of multiple causes of revelation, distinguishing between terms denoting the cause of revelation, and attending to the phenomena of fabrication and distortion in some narratives, as ways to overcome these shortcomings, are among the findings of this research.
