Quranic Humanities

Knowledge is Power: Nations with advanced knowledge are more successful in building robust internal systems, driving forward national progress, and even extending their cultural influence to other countries. Undoubtedly, knowledge is cumulative. Wherever diligent individuals adopt a critical, self-reliant, and proactive mindset—eschewing blind imitation and self-deprecation—they have discovered the missing pieces of knowledge, critiqued and refined what was produced, and either expanded the boundaries of science or, at the very least, elevated it. By addressing weaknesses and shortcomings, they have brought knowledge home, becoming pioneers of new sciences. They have transformed their countries into hubs of scientific innovation and, at times, exporters of knowledge to other regions of the world. A notable example is the transmission of knowledge between Islamic civilization and Western civilization in recent centuries. No historian or researcher can deny the West’s indebtedness to the scientific heritage of Muslims. The perseverance and focus of Western scholars in addressing new unknowns allowed them, after acquiring knowledge from Muslims, to refine, optimize, and expand it, ultimately producing the necessary sciences and technologies. All this was made possible through the efforts of dedicated scholars, supported by their nations.Even today, this process is ongoing. Self-confidence and the collective determination of a nation that believes in itself can facilitate the return of knowledge to a motivated and hardworking people, one with lofty goals and diligent scholars familiar with the shortcuts of knowledge acquisition. The Role of Humanities: Humanities and scholars in this field play a crucial role in creating the foundation for such transformative progress. These scholars can instill in their people a culture of independence, an eagerness to achieve greatness through knowledge and insight, a disdain for imitation, self-confidence, and a culture of perseverance and pursuit of lofty goals. They can inspire people to strive for progress. Humanities are the soul of civilizations, and scholars in this field have historically guided societies and scientific movements. In the Iranian society—deeply rooted in the uplifting culture of Islam and enriched by the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet’s household (Ahl al-Bayt)—achieving this is more accessible. If Islamic perspectives underpin the efforts of scholars and cultural builders, public participation will increase, fostering enthusiasm for progress and resilience in this grand pursuit. Consequently, the costs of transitioning from the current state to the desired condition will be reduced. The Quran as the Foundation for Humanities: The Quran provides the most comprehensive source for inspiring and foundational movements in the humanities. Within the framework of Islam, the Quran holds such authority that it serves as the standard for evaluating the authenticity of statements attributed to the Prophet’s household. In the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt, any saying that contradicts the Quran lacks evidentiary and logical value and must be dismissed. This principle underscores the importance of evaluating scientific achievements and hypotheses in Islamic and human sciences against the Quran. Therefore, Islamic thought emphasizes the necessity of rooting and grounding the humanities in the Quran. Scholars must pay attention to the subtleties and insights of the Quran to derive solutions to the fundamental principles, concepts, and even rules of various scientific disciplines.Building Islamic Humanities with the Quran: Under the guidance of the Quran, scholars in the humanities can construct a towering edifice of Islamic humanities. This divine source not only does not hinder human progress but also motivates and energizes scientific and research endeavors with accurate epistemological tools. Throughout the history of Muslims, the Quran has been recognized as both a source of understanding Islam and a stimulus for producing literary and Islamic sciences. In its shadow, other sacred texts, schools of thought, and religions have been evaluated. Sciences such as philosophy, mysticism, theology, jurisprudence, Quranic exegesis, ethics, history, and various literary and rhetorical disciplines have emerged. The Quran is also compatible with natural sciences, to the extent that its scientific miracles have been emphasized. By considering its capacity to guide humanity toward happiness and prosperity while steering clear of misery and suffering, the Quran empowers humans to develop advanced and comprehensive humanities. It evaluates and critiques the achievements of other humanities, preventing these sciences from falling into extremes. It is evident that a deeper engagement with the Quran and a more precise understanding of its language and layers of meaning will offer greater opportunities for thinkers. Individuals who combine expertise in Quranic studies with humanities—or who benefit from the collaboration of scholars in both fields—will be more successful in uncovering the intended meanings of this illuminating scripture. This Journal's Mission: The journal before you represents an effort to produce Quran-based humanities. It seeks to present articles from scholars in the humanities and Quranic studies to its esteemed audience, with the hope that, through the support of Quranic scholars, this illuminating path will continue until the production of Islamic humanities is fully realized. In this issue, six articles related to Quran-based Islamic sciences are presented. We deeply appreciate the scientific efforts of these distinguished scholars and pray to Almighty God for continued success for all those who serve the Quran and the cause of knowledge.

Political Power in the Quran from a Transcendent Wisdom Perspective

The concept of power is one of the most significant issues in political philosophy. Numerous thinkers have discussed this concept and endeavored to present an ideal image of power in the political realm. The author of this article aims to find an answer to this question in the Quran. Therefore, the main question of this article is: What image of political power can be inferred from the Quran? The author's theoretical framework for finding an answer to this question is the theory of (ʿetibārāt) and the essence of transcendent wisdom (the process of human becoming a knower whose intellect is comparable to the sensible world). Based on this, the author has tried to find the individual with inherent power and to consider political power as an اعتبار in relation to that power. Accordingly, by referring to the Quran, the author has selected two of the most beautiful names of God, "al-Qādir" and "al-Qawi," and by analyzing them, has depicted the desired political power. For the power to be comparable to the actual power, it must be related to it in the following aspects: 1. Relationship in terms of necessity with knowledge; 2. Relationship in terms of independence; 3. Relationship in terms of flexibility; 4. Relationship in terms of effect; 5. Relationship in terms of structure.

The Fundamental Criterion of Valuing in the Education of Values from the Point of View of Allameh Tabataba’i with Emphasis on al-Mizan

The education of Values is one of the most prominent trends in the field of education, which has attracted the attention of many researchers and analysts in the last three decades. This article aims to answer the basic question that from the perspective of Allameh Tabataba'i in the Tafsir al-Mizan: What important and outstanding principles and based on what key criterion, govern the valuation process in the realm of values education? Issues such as what, why, how values are, the validity of values, the criteria of valuations and the importance of the role of practical perceptions in the field of axiology are considered under this basic question. In examining these issues, the close relationship between values and beliefs as a key element of education shows that values are based on fixed facts. This is the most fundamental value criterion on which other value-based issues are based. Valuation from Al-Mizan's point of view follows the principles, the most important of which are: Theology as the core of the value system, human's innate-monotheistic tendency towards transcendental values, harmony in the development of transcendental values, and the necessity of perfecting movement in commitment to transcendental values. This paper, with the method of content analysis, explains and analyzes several important issues and principles in the field of valuation, the grounding for proposing and examining other value issues and entering the realm of the philosophy of values from one aspect and education and the education of values from another aspect, from the point of view of the Tafsir al-Mizan. The findings of the research indicate that a criterion such as the relationship between value and knowledge, in other words, the convergence of values with beliefs, both in terms of establishment and signature, is the most key value criterion in the process of the education of values from Allameh Tabataba’I’s point of view.

The Islamic Nature of the Science of Mysticism from the Perspective of the Qur'an

The science of mysticism (Irfan) and intuitive knowledge, as claimed by mystics, has long been a subject of debate, drawing both staunch supporters and opponents. Critics argue that the science of mysticism has no direct connection with revealed teachings or that its relationship with divine revelation is insufficient to consider it as Quranic and rooted in revelation. Conversely, others maintain that this discipline originates from the essence of Quranic monotheism (Tawhid). Given this divergence, which stems from ambiguities regarding the relationship between mysticism and revelation, it becomes imperative to clarify the extent to which this science aligns with Islamic principles.Using a library-based research method and jurisprudential inquiries, this study examines the scientific nature of mysticism and its relation to human sciences. It further investigates the extent to which the foundational components of mysticism-its definition, subject matter, authenticity, principles, objectives, methodology, and core issues-are Islamic from the perspective of Quranic verses. The findings indicate that the fundamental elements of the science of mysticism align with the Qur'an and can be substantiated through its verses

Explanation of metaethics issues based on the verses of the Holy Quran

Metaethics, as the rational foundation of ethics, is a sub-branch of philosophy and one of the genitive philosophies. This knowledge studies ethics with a perspective-rational view and with an external approach and discusses its conceptual and affirmative principles. Some of its most important issues are: semantics of moral concepts, epistemology of moral propositions, ontology of moral propositions and the like. Based on self-founded and secular rationality, the method in this science is completely philosophical and rational. But based on Islamic rationality, in addition to applying the logic of reason, it can also be presented to the verses of the Qur'an and analyze and explain the mentioned issues by referring to the revelation and its inference. This paper tries to examine and explain the metaethics issues by referring to divine verses, especially the moral rules of the Qur'an, using a combined (rational-narrative) method. The main finding of the article is that although the mentioned issues are not explicitly mentioned in the Qur'an, but considering the rationality of religion and the Qur'an on the one hand and the proposition of moral rules in it on the other hand, it is possible to understand the philosophical infrastructure of Islamic ethics inferred from the verses of the Holy Quran through inclusion and implied implication.

An Introduction to the Philosophy of "Law" in the Thought of Allameh Tabatabai

The issue of law in society is one of the significant topics in the fields of social sciences and legal studies. The origin of law, its enforcement mechanisms, and the ways people adhere to it are among the primary concerns in this domain. This study seeks to address these questions from the perspective of Allameh Tabatabai in his exegesis Al-Mizan. According to Allameh Tabatabai, social life and society require a law for their survival and continuity that aligns with human nature and the system of creation. Such a law can only be derived from God Almighty and conveyed through divine legislative guidance. Human reason and innate nature are insufficient to establish and codify such a law.Regarding the enforcement of law and compelling people to adhere to it, the Quran adopts a method based on moral education and religious teachings. The Quran identifies three levels of law enforcement: at the individual level, morality serves as the guarantor of legal compliance; at the interpersonal and social level, individuals monitor adherence to the law through enjoining good and forbidding evil; and at the macro level, the government assumes the responsibility for enforcing the law

The Philosophical Semantics of "Moral Obligation" from Allameh Tabatabai's Perspective and Its Relation to the Concept of I'tibariyyat and Its Impact on Theological Discussions in the Qur'an

llameh Tabatabai, a distinguished Shiite exegete and a prominent thinker, is renowned for his profound and multifaceted intellectual contributions. His approach to the sociology of moral knowledge aligns with the tradition of social epistemology, which emphasizes that understanding certain types of knowledge depends on comprehending social phenomena and their interactions. Laws and social traditions, as foundational principles of knowledge, are exclusively derived through religion.Religious knowledge, particularly among exegetes and theologians, offers a perspective on existence, human destiny, and the paths toward spiritual elevation and divine proximity, expressed through divine and social traditions. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method to address the following questions: What is the philosophical process behind Allameh Tabatabai's understanding of moral obligation? How does this understanding influence his exegetical and theological approaches to the Qur'an? The findings reveal that Allameh Tabatabai's analysis of the concept of moral obligation is rooted in his theory of I'tibariyyat (constructive concepts) as detailed in his treatise on this subject. He bases his intellectual framework on the theory of purpose and the use of language to signify abstract meanings, connecting these to practical applications and criteria for truth. He further applies these foundations, using Al-Sakkaki’s theory of metaphor, in theological discussions. From Allameh Tabatabai’s perspective, "moral absolutism" asserts that the principles and ethical propositions in the Qur'an are independent of external factors, such as environmental, social, cultural, economic conditions, or the psychological state of the agent. Instead, moral goodness or badness is determined solely by the intrinsic elements of the subject and their actual consequences.
